Is Your Home Ready for an EV Charger?

Buying an electric vehicle? Charging at home is the most convenient way to keep it ready to go. Here’s what to know before you install a home charger.

Level 1 vs. Level 2 charging

Level 1 uses a standard 120V outlet and adds only a few miles of range per hour. Level 2 uses a 240V circuit and can fully charge most EVs overnight. For most drivers, Level 2 is the way to go.

Does your panel have room?

A Level 2 charger usually needs a dedicated 40 to 60 amp circuit. An electrician will do a load calculation to see if your panel can handle it, or whether you need a panel or service upgrade.

Where should the charger go?

Most chargers go in the garage or on an outside wall near the driveway. The closer to your panel, the simpler the install.

Permits and inspections

EV charger installs usually require a permit and inspection. A licensed electrician takes care of this for you.
