Standby vs. Portable Generators: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Power outages from storms are a fact of life in Maryland. A generator keeps your home running, but which kind is right for you?

Standby generators

A standby generator is permanently installed outside your home and runs on natural gas or propane. When the power goes out, an automatic transfer switch starts it within seconds, with no effort on your part. It can power your whole home or just essential circuits.

Portable generators

A portable generator costs less up front and can power key items like your refrigerator, sump pump, and a few lights. For safe use, it should connect through a generator inlet and interlock kit or a transfer switch, never through a dryer outlet or extension cords run through a window.

Which should you choose?

If you want hands-free, whole-home backup, a standby generator is the best choice. If you want basic backup on a budget, a portable generator with a properly installed inlet is a great option.
