Your electrical panel is the heart of your home’s electrical system. If it’s outdated or overloaded, it can hold you back and even put your home at risk. Here are six signs it may be time for an upgrade.
1. Breakers trip often
If breakers trip when you run the microwave and a hair dryer at the same time, your panel may not be able to keep up with your household’s needs.
2. Lights dim or flicker
Lights that dim when appliances kick on can point to an overloaded circuit or an undersized service.
3. You still have a fuse box or a 60 or 100 amp service
Many older homes were wired for far less power than today’s families use. Most modern homes need 200 amps.
4. You’re adding something big
An EV charger, heat pump, hot tub, or home addition often needs more capacity than an older panel can provide.
5. Your panel is a known problem brand
Federal Pacific (Stab-Lok) and Zinsco panels have well-documented safety issues and should be replaced.
6. Warm, buzzing, or scorched breakers
Heat, buzzing, or burn marks are warning signs. Call an electrician right away.
