Why Columbia Homes Are Ready for Electrical Upgrades

Columbia was planned by James Rouse. It opened in 1967 with the village of Wilde Lake, and its ten villages were built out between 1967 and 1990. That means many Columbia homes are 35 to nearly 60 years old, and many may still have their original electrical service and panel.

Those panels were sized for how families lived decades ago, not for EV charging, induction ranges or swapping a gas furnace for a heat pump. Adding a 40- or 50-amp charger circuit to an original panel can push it past its limit. Before any EV install, we do a load calculation. Then we’ll tell you honestly whether you need a panel upgrade or whether a smaller change will do. Our post Is your home ready for an EV charger? explains what we look at.

When a panel upgrade means a new service, we coordinate with BGE for the disconnect and reconnect.

Storms and Power Outages

Columbia gets the same summer storms as the rest of Howard County. In the June 2012 derecho, the county had about 58,000 outages, and some homes went close to a week without power. If you work from home or rely on a sump pump or medical equipment, a generator is worth considering. We install both standby and portable generator hookups and can help you decide.

Permits in Howard County

Electrical work in Columbia is permitted through the Howard County Department of Inspections, Licenses and Permits (DILP). Work can’t start until the permit is issued. We file the permit and meet the inspector, so the job is done right and on record.

Columbia Electrical FAQ

Can you install an EV charger at a Columbia townhouse?
Often, yes, if there’s a practical route from your panel to where you park. Some homeowner associations have rules for exterior equipment, so check yours before we start. We’ll look at the layout during your free estimate.

My Columbia home still has its original panel. Should I replace it?
Not always. But if your breakers trip often, you’re adding a big appliance or charger, or the panel shows its age, it’s worth a look during a free estimate.

Do you work on commercial spaces in Columbia?
Yes. We handle commercial lighting, circuits, troubleshooting and repairs as well as residential work.
